Known for Italian restaurants, many clustered in a district known as The Hill, St. Louis also provides hungry patrons with plenty of other ethnic options in friendly neighborhoods throughout the city. A Hard Rock Café in Union Station keeps things rocking and Sweetie Pies serves soul food with a rock twist since it's run by a former back-up singer for Ike and Tina Turner. On famed Route 66, the landmark Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, debuting as a roadside parlor some 75 years ago, peddles Christmas trees and frozen delights including sundaes, malts and thick concoctions called concretes. Crown Candy Kitchen remains an icon of sweets, burgers and egg-salad sandwiches for folks yearning for days of old. Inexpensive standbys, open around the clock, include Uncle Bill’s Pancake & Dinner House, City Diner, and the Eat-Rite Diner. For pizza, Fortel’s Pizza Den started out as a mom-and-pop to grow into a city-wide chain known for homemade dough and quality mozzarella. Steakhouses stretch from Dierdorf & Hart’s to the Tenderloin Room.
